Today, I decided that this writing thing works really well for me. I am going to keep doing it. I have no indication of whether I am any good at it. I do not know if I can sell a single book.
What I do know is that every time I work in my draft, I catch myself getting pulled into what I am reading. I start by making simple edits, like removing a name inconsistency or something similar. This kind of edit should be rather mechanical. Find an instance, change it. Move to the next instance.
I caught myself on a few occasions, reading the chapter and sections. As someone who fights with ADHD, I can say that being drawn into a story resonates loudly with me. I’m usually the kind of person who skips stories and dialogs (especially in video games).
So, with all of that said, I decided to upgrade my tools. So far, I have been using Google Docs. I also use ChatGPT for managing various aspects of what I am writing (see my previous posts about that).
Now, I purchased Scrivener and installed it. Then spent a few hours transitioning my draft from Google Docs into Scrivener to take advantage of all the neat things I can do with it (such as character management, places, factions, etc…). I will be continuing that effort for probably the next few days.
After that, I purchased a subscription to ProWritingAid. This tool will replace my ChatGPT subscription. ChatGPT is a powerful tool, and I am quite grateful for what I accomplished with it. However, ProWritingAid fulfills that same functionality and a bit more. I will probably still use ChatGPT for various little inquiries – for example, how are magnetics and gravity principals related? 😉
Anyway, I am very excited about this transition. I feel these products will add significant value to my efforts.
